Introduction to JZMU

Founded in 1946 during the Liberation War, Jinzhou Medical University went by Liaoji Military Region Health School in Taonan, Jilin Province. It moved to Jinzhou, Liaoning Province in 1949, and developed into Jinzhou Medical College in 1958. It was renamed as Liaoning Medical College in 2006, and passed the Undergraduate Teaching Level Evaluation held by the Ministry of Education with excellent results in 2007. With the approval of the Education Ministry, it was officially renamed Jinzhou Medical University in March 2016.

With 76 years’ development, JZMU has become a provincial institution of higher education focusing on medicine, with multi-categories and various forms. It covers an area of 994,987.60 square meters.

JZMU has been broadened with the category of General Higher Education, Continuing Education and International Education. Under these categories, there are 27 undergraduate programs in 6 primary disciplines, namely medicine, engineering, agriculture, science, management and education. JZMU was officially approved as a master’s degree granting unit in 1984, and obtained the qualification of applying for a master degree from an equivalent education level in 1999. Presently, JZMU has 8 A-level disciplines and 59 B-level disciplines to grant academic master degree and 5 disciplines to grant a professional master degree. The Ministry of Education approved JZMU’s joint doctoral program with China Medical University in 2003. Currently, 21 Ph.D. supervisors in clinical medicine are engaged and the joint doctoral programs are implemented in JZMU and other high-profile universities, such as Jinan University, Suzhou University and Dalian Medical University.

JZMU has 3 national high-level talents, 1 winner of the National Famous Teacher Award, 4 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of Education Ministry, 1 national-level candidate of the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, and 23 recipients of Special Government Allowances from the State Council. JZMU also has 3 outstanding experts in Liaoning Province, 4 candidates of Liaoning Provincial Higher Education Climbing Scholars Support Program, and 16 winners of Liaoning Provincial Famous Teacher Award.

JZMU has always been adhering to the central position of teaching work, taking fostering virtue through education as the foundation, continuously deepening teaching reform, strengthening teaching management, improving the quality of talent training, and achieving fruitful teaching results.

Presently, JZMU has 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 national characteristic major, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 10 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 3 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors. Furthermore, there is 1 pilot major for engineering talent training model reform, 3 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot majors, 3 provincial demonstration majors, and 5 provincial characteristics (brand) majors. There are 14 provincial quality courses, 7 provincial quality course resources, and 6 provincial teaching teams. Besides, there are also 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 5 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers, 6 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and 12 provincial practical education bases for students.

Following the trend of international medical education, JZMU took the lead in carrying out the reform of Organ System-centered Medical Curriculum Model in 1991, breaking the traditional discipline-centered curriculum model, providing the national higher medical education with a successful paradigm, turning a new chapter of coexisting multi-curriculum model in China. With 2 second prizes in National Teaching Achievements and 2 first prizes in Provincial Teaching Achievements, the reform has also been highly valued by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health; as the Program for the Reform of Teaching Content and Curriculum Model for Higher Medical Education in the 21st Century, the reform has been approved by the Ministry of Education.

JZMU has made a number of breakthroughs in scientific research. In the 1970s and 1980s, the project “Etiology and Prevention Research of Rice Field Dermatitis” won the major contribution award at the National Science Conference; the research on etiology and pathology has obtained Grade B scientific and technological achievement authorized by the Ministry of Health in terms of its crucial contributions to the prevention and control of endemic diseases in China. A study on magnetic resin filling material and technique for root canal obtained the third prize of the National Science and Technology Invention Award, which filled the domestic gap in this field at that time.

JZMU has succeeded in integration of industry-university-research, in which Jinzhou Aohong Pharmaceutical Company Limited, a High-tech biopharmaceutical enterprise, was established, and became a role model in higher medical education.

JZMU has been approved by Liaoning Province to construct 2 major science and technology platforms, 13 key laboratories, 1 Engineering Laboratory, 1 Engineering Research Center, 1 Collaborative Innovation Center, 2 Professional Technology Innovation Centers, and 2 Clinical Medical Research Centers. The discipline of basic medicine was selected as the first-class discipline construction project in Liaoning Province.

JZMU hosts 2 publications, Journal of Jinzhou Medical University and Journal of Jinzhou Medical University (Social Science Edition).

Currently, JZMU has more than 13,000 full-time students, including 8,832 undergraduates from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across the country.

The ranking of student sources continued to improve in 2021. Clinical medicine, stomatology, medical imaging, and anesthesiology in provincial five-year key medical majors ranked top 24% in Liaoning Province. Five provinces and cities raised their scores higher than the cut-off point for first-tier universities and 11 provinces and cities raised their scores by 100 points above the control line.

The recruitment of international students started in 1997. JZMU gained approval by the Ministry of Education as a qualified institution for Clinical Medicine Education in China in 2012. The university was officially listed by the Ministry of Education as one of the universities accepting Chinese Government Scholarship for International students in China.

JZMU was approved by the Ministry of Education as a qualified institution for recruiting students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in 2015. The university engaged in the Belt and Road strategy. The total number of recruitment countries has reached 62, and there are 851 registered international students in JZMU to date. The proportion of international students ranks eighth in China, and the international education level remains at the forefront of universities in Liaoning Province.

Currently, JZMU has 94 practice bases for various majors, including 3 directly affiliated hospitals and 5 indirectly affiliated hospitals. The First Affiliated Hospital, one of the three major regional medical centers in Liaoning Province, a national resident standardized training base and national coronary heart disease intervention training base, is the largest tertiary first-class general hospital in western Liaoning. The Second Affiliated Hospital is a national resident physician standardized training base (general stomatology), Chinese Stomatological Association of Oral Professional Nurse Training Clinical Practice Base, Liaoning Provincial Stomatology Clinical Skills Training Center, Liaoning Provincial Oral Health Education Popularization Base, West Liaoning Oral Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center. It was awarded Healthy Oral Promotion Base and Clinical Skills Training Base by the Chinese Dental Diseases Prevention and Control Foundation. The Third Affiliated Hospital is a tertiary first-class hospital, Liaoning Provincial Work Injury Rehabilitation Center, Liaoning Provincial Diabetes Prevention and Control Center in western Liaoning, Liaoning Provincial Diabetic Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center in western Liaoning. In 2020, it gained a first internet hospital license in Jinzhou, and it actively carried out Internet and Medical Health and 5G Applications to serve patients with high-quality medical diagnoses and treatment. The three affiliated hospitals have trained 8 Liaoning Famous Doctors, 11 Liaoning Famous Young Doctors, 1 Liaoning Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor and 1 Liaoning Young Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor, providing strong support for Jinzhou to build a central city in western Liaoning.

The education work has been highlighted through positive social effects. Role models, such as Ding Hui, Zhai Guilan, Guan Youliang, Bullet Train Rescue Team, Popular Science Rescue Team, and Elevator Rescue Team, have emerged to heal the wounded and rescue the dying. During the fight against Covid-19 pandemic, medical teams, composed of over 140 medical workers from the First and Third Affiliated Hospitals, rushed to the Coronavirus Pneumonia Treatment Centers in Wuhan, Dalian and Jinzhou, especially those 111 medical workers who fought in Leishenshan Hospital, Wuhan, whose heroic deeds were reported by CCTV, Liaoning TV and other media. Therefore, some team members have been commended by the State Council and the health system, and the report of “Jinzhou Medical University has Taken Multiple Measures to Foster Virtue through Education with Remarkable Results” was published on People Forum Website of People Daily.

JZMU adheres to the principle of “establishing the university with quality, strengthening the university with disciplines, developing the university with talents, regulating the university with principles, and running the university by law”, and stays true to the fine tradition of “running the university diligently and thriftily, tackling challenges and overcoming difficulties”.
